Bats are beneficial to our environment when it comes to reducing insects but when they enter a structure they can become a problem.
Bats can be found in structures throughout North Carolina, many people never know that they have bats in their structure until they are caught off guard by one flying through the house or if they start to see droppings on the ground under one of their louvers / gable vent.
Bats are most active in the spring and summer time, this is when the colony will seek out roosting sites to set up their nursery for giving birth. In most cases a female bat will give birth to one pup per year but it's not unheard of to find a mother giving birth to twins. Bats will start searching for roosting sites in late march -April many of these places will be in structures such as gable vents, the boxing around homes and behind or in chimneys. The size of the colony can range from 10 bats to hundreds of bats depending on the conditions and the age of the colony.
