Does your attic or structure sound like some one is having a party in it and you’re not invited?
If so, you might have a problem with Squirrels.
Squirrels are great to watch when they are outside but are menaces when they make your home their home. Many structures in North Carolina become the subject of Squirrel invasion.
Squirrels fall in the rodent family because their teeth constantly grow and therefore they chew on everything they come in contact with. When squirrels take nest in structures they cause large amounts of damage to building materials. In most cases they are using attics as nesting sites to raise their young.
Squirrels cause the following damage when found in structures.
- Damage to building materials caused by chewing.
- Damage to insulation caused by fecal waste.
- Damage to Electrical wiring caused by chewing.
- Odor associated with fecal waste.
- Fleas and Parasites.
These are just a few ways that squirrels cause damage to structures but the possibilities are endless.

There are two types of squirrels that you may encounter in the Triangle area, the first is the gray squirrel that you see on a daily basis. The gray squirrel is most active during the early morning hours around the time that the sun comes out, then you will hear them around dark because they are returning to their nest. Gray squirrels in attic will take the insulation and build a makeshift nest to raise their young. You will see signs of feces that look like mice feces and torn insulation in a bundle. In most cases you can find anywhere from 2-6 gray squirrels in a attic.
The other type of squirrel that we have here in the Triangle is the Southern Flying Squirrel, this is a small squirrel that somewhat looks like a chipmunk in size. They are most active during the early morning hours from 1:00am -5:00am they are able to enter through holes the size of a walnut. Flying squirrels colonize and therefore you can find 5-25 flying squirrels in attic at any given time. Instead of making bundle makeshift nest they tunnel into the insulation and you will see tunnel holes going down into the insulation along with feces that look the same as mice feces. Flying squirrel problems can get out of hand quickly if not taken care of ASAP due to the rapid growth population.
