Fleas are one of the more important groups of insect pests because they not only cause discomfort by biting, but they can transmit several diseases such as plague and murine typhus.

Biology:

Females lay 4-8 eggs each blood meal, for a total of up to 400 in a lifetime. Eggs usually fall off the host and hatch in 2-14 days. Larvae usually feed on organic matter such as droppings from adult fleas and feces of animals, but can feed satisfactorily on rodent feces alone. The larvae go through 3 instars in 1-5 weeks and then spin a cocoon and pupate. Under favorable conditions, adults emerge in 1-3 weeks. Development time (egg to adult) may be as short as 17 days. Adults may live more than 2 years.

It is not necessary to have pets in the building in order to have fleas present. Since fleas can jump about 6” vertically, they can easily hitch a ride on shoes, pants, etc. If you do have pets fleas are commonly found near their sleeping areas and on their coats of fur. In some cases when wildlife is nesting in or around structures they can cause flea infestations.

Flea Control is a 4 part process

  1. Wildlife that is nesting in or around structures must be removed and denied entry.
  2. If pets have fleas, they must be treated with an approved product to control future infestations.
  3. Indoor areas must be treated in order to kill flea infestation.
  4. Outside areas must be treated in order to prevent re-infestation.
